I have been an Essence magazine subscriber for quite some time, so I was excited to receive the 2026 Special Collector’s Edition. When it arrived, I did what I always do. Admire the cover, flip through the pages, and look forward to reading the stories inside when I had more time. When I came back to the magazine, what surprised me was that I had this magazine for weeks before I realized something important.
There were two different covers. Somehow, I had only seen one. When I finally discovered the second cover, I paused and thought about how easy it is to miss something that is right in front of us. The magazine had been sitting on my desk the entire time, but I had not taken the time to see the full picture.
That moment became a reflection. How often do we do the same thing with ourselves? How often do we only recognize one version of who we are while overlooking the other parts of ourselves waiting to be discovered?
As women, we often become deeply familiar with the roles we carry. We know ourselves as the professional, the caregiver, the leader, the one who makes things happen, the one others depend on. Just like I did not realize the Essence collector’s edition had another cover, sometimes we do not realize there are parts of ourselves we have not fully embraced. There are gifts we minimize because they come naturally. There are dreams we postpone because we question our readiness. There are strengths we overlook because we are too focused on what still needs to be accomplished. What if there is more to you than what you have allowed yourself to see? What if the woman you are today is only one part of the story?
One cover represents the woman who has walked through challenges, overcome obstacles, and continued showing up even when life was difficult. She is determined. She is strong.
